Deeply disappointed, Chief John Ross returned to the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and spread the word to all the village chiefs, so they could inform their people what President Andrew Jackson had told him. He then sent riders to call for a meeting of the National Council of Cherokees on Tuesday, June 29, at their usual spot on the west edge of the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee.

When the meeting took place, the Cherokee leaders were very upset, but unanimously agreed with their president that they dare not bring the United States Army down on them by rebelling against the Indian Removal Act.

Ross ran his gaze over their faces and said, “My friends, for the sake of all Cherokees, you have made the right decision. When we are told that we must begin our journey to Indian Territory, we must obey and give up our homeland without resistance. My hope is that we will find a place to call home in Indian Territory.”
